Cell phone use is limited and is based on level of care.
Screens are high-tech and always improving on their quality and clarity. This brings interest to the human eye and causes a Dopamine surge. Furthermore, we get dopamine surges from our activity on screens such as social media likes, reshares, or from simply scrolling. When someone is used to having their Dopamine dramatically rise from the constant stimuli, our brain becomes desensitized to those rushes. Meaning, if your brain requires a lot of stimulation to get that rush, any smaller stimulation does not bring any excitement. This presents itself as a general sense of feeling “blah”, “flat”, or apathetic. Just like an alcoholic may need a stronger drink to feel altered, the screen-addicted person needs an increased amount of stimuli to have any interest in the activity. This makes reading, learning, the outdoors, hobbies, and even face-to-face conversation feel incredibly boring or even depressing. The brain requires a break from the screen to help it learn interest in simple things again. At Solstice Southwest, you will learn about what we call the door to dopamine: simple routines to increase dopamine and human connection.
Screens will always be important. But, building on your neuralplasicity is more important. We continue to marvel and build on the fact that the neural pathways of the brain can change based on the patterns you engage. Solstice is about developing self-efficacy and quality of life and screens limit both if we do not use them with plan and measurement.
